Bett, a native of North Carolina, found inspiration in the storied Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and its battle against coastal erosion during the 1990s. This fascination culminated in a poignant song, which served as the cornerstone of her third album, “Hatteras: If a Lighthouse Could Speak”. The album, released in 1999, garnered widespread acclaim, coinciding with the historic relocation of the lighthouse one-half mile inland. Bett’s music resonates with sincerity and optimism, offering listeners a glimpse into her keen observations of the world around us.

Contributions to Music and Community: Bett’s impact extends beyond the realm of music, as she actively contributes to both live music and her community. Prior to the challenges posed by Covid-19, she hosted the esteemed Little Lake Hill House Concert Series, showcasing musicians from diverse backgrounds. Additionally, she served as the booking chair for the Triangle Folk Music Society and played a pivotal role in founding the North Carolina Songwriters’ Co-op. Demonstrating her commitment to social causes, Bett volunteered at Love Wins Ministries, a day shelter for individuals experiencing homelessness. She also engaged students at Enloe High School’s audio-visual department in creating a music video highlighting the cherished tradition of baking Christmas cookies, which she continues annually for families at the Ronald McDonald House in Durham.

Educator and Mentor: For over four decades, Bett has been a sought-after music teacher in Raleigh, NC. Her dedication to musical education is evident in her tenure as a guitar instructor at North Carolina State University for 29 years. Today, she continues to nurture the next generation of musicians in her private studio, offering instruction in guitar, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, as well as theory and composition.

Bett’s multifaceted contributions to music, education, and community service exemplify her unwavering commitment to enriching lives through art and compassion. As both a prolific songwriter and dedicated educator, she leaves an indelible mark on those she encounters, inspiring creativity, empathy, and a profound appreciation for the beauty of the human experience. 

Bett began showing friends how to play guitar during junior high school when groups would gather. She would teach them chords and rhythms. After studying music beginning at age five and through college as a voice major/piano minor, she knew enough theory that could be applied to guitar and all instruments that can be used for accompaniment styles. She began teaching private guitar lessons in 1978 and through the Wake County Community Schools and the YWCA. In 1979 she was asked to teach guitar classes at North Carolina State University where she continued to teach for 29 years. She continues to teach private lessons in guitar, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, composition and theory. She loves the sounds created by alternate tunings and is knowledgeable in DADGAD guitar tuning. She has created a series of tutorials to help demystify the tuning for beginners. She enjoys helping others find their voice in music and will likely continue to teach until the last student quits.
